Stage the City - Associate Directors

STAGE THE CITY is one of Nonsuch Studios biggest and most ambitious projects ever, working with communities across Nottingham to bring our city to life and tell its stories through engaging outdoor theatre and performance. 

At the heart of the programme, we’re working with 9 community groups, across three key neighbourhoods: Sneinton, The Meadows & Bulwell, to create celebratory performances about these places in early Spring 2027.  

To make this happen, we’re looking to recruit 2, freelance Associate Directors to work with groups and bring these performances to life.

THE ROLE

The Associate Director will work as part of the STAGE THE CITY project team and wider Nonsuch Studios creative and community team to:

• devise and direct a new piece of outdoor performance, that will celebrate the local area and the people who live there.  
• work with community champions and Nonsuch’s Artistic Director, and Senior Community Producer to develop the creative concept for the show
• deliver up to 12 weeks of devising and rehearsal sessions with 3 community groups, including Tech and Dress rehearses ahead of final performance. 
• create a safe, welcoming, fun and creative environment for all community members. 
• support and be supported by the Assistant Facilitator throughout the sessions, recording engagement data, feedback and ensuring everyone has a great time.

FEE

The fee for this role is set at £120 per session (1.5 - 2 hours) inclusive of planning and briefing meetings. Where multiple sessions are delivered in a singular day, a half-day or full-day rate will be offered. Larger planning meetings and training days are paid upon agreement. 

In addition to the delivery fee, local travel costs can be reimbursed up to £10 per day.

• Details of your past experience in working with communities and directing devised performances in relation to the Ideal Candidate criteria in the application pack.
• Overview of your availability and any pre-existing commitments during the delivery period and also up until 14th May 2027.
