Artists at
Nonsuch Studios

Nonsuch Studios has and always will be an artist-led organisation, and that doesn’t just extend to those artists we have embedded in our team, but to artists from across the wider-East Midlands who we collaborate with, support and champion across our programmes.
There are three key ways we support Artists at Nonsuch Studios: through our in-house artist offer Theatre Lab, via our partnership and active membership of In Good Company and as part of our Programming of new work as Nottingham’s only independent Fringe theatre.
Theatre Lab

Theatre Lab is Nonsuch Studio’s in-house offer for artists. A programme of workshops, networks and opportunities to bring together creatives, practitioners, artists and producers from across theatre and performance in Nottingham (and the wider East Midlands).

As a small organisation, we’re all too aware of how important opportunities that support artists and theatre-makers to thrive are and so Theatre Lab aims to enable greater connectivity and facilitate opportunities to those who need it through a number of simple programmes and initiatives.

Theatre Lab focusses on supporting the making of exciting, dynamic and diverse theatre that’s created through a devised and non-text-based approach as well as support for writers.

In its simplest form Theatre Lab is a programme any artist can sign up to, you’ll get discount in the Nonsuch Kitchen; access to special events, socials & meet-ups; last minute studio discounts; and ticket offers across our programme. Theatre Lab is as much about opening up the space for you to do your thing as it is about pointing you to the support that you need from our partners, such as In Good Company.

In Good Company

In Good Company is the Artist Development programme for the Midlands, bringing together over 9 venues to champion and support amazing theatre made, produced and connected to the Midlands.

Nonsuch Studios were the first Nottingham City partner to join the programme in 2018 after being part of the original cohort of Associate Artists in 2014.

Programming at Nonsuch Studios

As Nottingham’s independent theatre and creative venue, we’re always excited to programme our theatre and performance spaces for the upcoming months and years.

We want our performance and event programme to be eclectic and diverse; with the best acts we can find to excite Nottingham’s amazing audiences and bring people together in wonderful and interesting ways.

We also want to do things differently and ensure that the way we programme is as open as possible, and welcome applications from tour-ready work as well as work that’s in development or just the seed of an idea! Read the rest of this page and submit your programming enquiry via the form below!

What do we want to see?

Our events programme focuses are theatre, performance, livestreamed events, comedy, cabaret, film, dance, family, music and events (the sky’s the limit).

But we’re also keen to explore new possibilities and innovation with exciting producers and artists. We’re keen to explore types of events where audiences engage in ideas, learn something new and come together to experience something special.

Let’s also mash things together. Think Film & Food, Live Magazines and much, much, more! To see what we have going on, check out our What’s On page.

Creative Learning & Community Events

At Nonsuch Studios we also love creative learning and community activities, where individuals develop skills, do something new and unlock their creativity.

We’re keen to give as many opportunities as possible to creative classes, courses, workshops and residencies across our fabulous spaces.

Important Things

Season Timings
We programme three seasons per year (January-April, May-August, September-December) and ideally programme up to three months in advance of the season start. Each season has a call-out and submissions period. We programme creative classes and courses throughout the year on a rolling basis, ideally two months in advance of the start date.

Finances
It’s important to note that Nonsuch is not regularly funded and so we don’t have a programming budget. We always like to be upfront about this so that we can have open conversations from the offset about this, and usually, this means that we offer ticket splits.

Available Spaces
We programme across all our spaces at Nonsuch Studios, beyond (off-site), and with our new live-streaming equipment, also online, so check out what’s we have to offer before getting in touch.

Our building was built in 1935 and is not fully accessible, since taking over the spaces in 2019 we’ve been working hard to increase accessibility and our ground floor now has level access. Whilst we continue to fundraise for lifts and further access improvements, we understand this is not an ideal situation for creatives and audiences with access needs. Please contact us if you have any questions, queries or concerns about this before you make a submission.

Programme or Hire?
You don’t have to submit an idea if you would like to hire one of our spaces. If you’re unsure whether you should submit or not, please send us an email at programming@wearenonsuch.com.

Video & Show Invites
We like to have seen everything we programme at Nonsuch Studios, however, we understand that it may not be possible for artists to invite us to see everything. So if you have a video, even of just a rehearsal, we’d love to see it (don’t worry, our team have seen A LOT of shakey footage and can see past it).

Make a Submission

We are currently programming for Spring & Summer 2024 and we are interested in hearing from artists for all kinds of performances and events. We aim to get back to everyone who gets in touch with us. Our next wave of submissions will be reviewed in early September.

If you require a more accessible version of this form or have any urgent queries or enquiries, please email us via programming@wearenonsuch.com or call us on 0115 837 1950.
